Description

This study covers the interoperability between various information systems used in Hacettepe University Hospitals in Turkey. Some interface applications using standards such as HL7 and DICOM and the interoperability experiences in the development of the solution are analyzed in this case study.

Abstract

Hacettepe University Hospitals are one of the largest and most reputable hospitals in Turkey (www.hacettepe.com.tr) . Hospital complex is composed of 3 (adult, children, oncology) hospitals and various specialized units (dentistry, emergency, etc). Hacettepe University Hospitals are pioneer in IT systems in hospitals not only for the largest scope of implementation, but also and especially utilizing state-of-the-art IT systems in various departments, such as PACS&RIS in radiology, NMIS in Nuclear Medicine, etc. The aim of this study is to summarize the interoperability experiences in various IT systems (HIS, RIS, PACS, NMIS, LIS) utilized in Hacettepe. A comprehensive interoperability level is achieved between a legacy HIS and corTTex based departmental solutions via HL7 and DICOM, relying on IHE norms. This study also briefs the lessons learned in these projects
